Accepting that you're getting older isn't always easy, but the right mindset can make all the difference.
Not everyone is as comfortable with their age, and for good reason. "Society's view of aging influences how people feel about their own age," explains psychologist Jean-Louis Drolet. Social realities like ageism and a youth-centric culture can make people wary of getting older.
Embracing Life
Despite society's emphasis on youth, you don't have to play along. "Aging is personal. Each person must confront their own age and what it means to them," Drolet says. "At every stage, we face obstacles. We shouldn't label ourselves as 'old.' We are people with experiences, continuing to grow."
People who accept their age tend to embrace life. "They understand existence and its finite nature without fear," Drolet notes. "Resisting aging makes us focus on lost time instead of living fully."
Accepting Your Age
Accepting your age means being honest with yourself and valuing your journey. Recognizing your age helps you plan and live fully. Poitras embodies this philosophy. "Living in fear of the end means you're just spending your life, not living it. I have ongoing projects, teach painting, and create my own happiness. That's key to aging well."
Just a Number
The saying "age is just a number" holds some truth. Studies show that good psychological health helps cope with aging and live life fully. "The happier you are with your life, the easier it is to accept your age," Drolet says. Reflect on your life with gratitude. "Ask yourself, 'Can I appreciate my life despite mistakes and hardships?' Refusing to accept your age hinders you from making the most of your life."
Focusing less on appearances and more on inner life helps. "Aging is a time to order your life, resolve conflicts, and find meaning," Drolet adds. "This inner work involves reflection and often, some help. Address loneliness, relationship issues, and lack of passion. Learn new things, express new emotions, and challenge negative beliefs about aging."
Tips for Embracing Your Age
To celebrate your age like Poitras, try these actions:
Stay Active: "Your body is aging, but staying physically active helps maintain your self-worth," Drolet says.
Be Realistic: "Aging is the only way to stay alive. Embrace the benefits and possibilities of each life stage," Drolet advises.
Free Yourself: Ignore what others think. "You don't know what people think unless they tell you, so don't care," says psychologist Marie-Ange Pongis-Khandjian. Also, be kind to yourself. "Decide to be happy despite wrinkles and aches."
Practice Gratitude: Enjoy simple pleasures like the smell of coffee or the call of a bird.
Have Role Models: Learn from people who age well.
Stay Curious: Keep up with the world and new interests. Poitras enjoys learning and spending time with her granddaughters.
Make Plans: Having projects and dreams helps you age well. "Make your life a dream and turn it into reality," Poitras says.
Stay Positive: Focus on the good. "Turn disadvantages into advantages," Drolet suggests. For example, if your knee hurts, use it as an opportunity to read a good book.
Be Useful: Volunteer or mentor others.
Seek Therapy: If accepting aging is hard, talk to a therapist. "Talking helps," Pongis-Khandjian says. "Therapy enlarges your internal space, making room for thought and emotion."
Embracing your age with a positive mindset can significantly enhance your quality of life. Celebrate every year and make the most of your journey!
