Maintaining good physical condition includes taking care of your visual health. As we age, certain bad habits and illnesses can accumulate and negatively impact our vision. To better preserve your eyesight, here are five key behaviors to avoid:

1. Neglecting Regular Eye Exams

One of the worst things you can do for your eye health is to skip regular eye exams. According to Dr. Éric Poulin, president of the Order of Optometrists of Quebec (OOQ), "It's not just about whether you need glasses; it's also about opportunistic screenings." Regular eye exams can help detect conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma, which often don't show symptoms until they are irreversible. Early detection through routine checkups is crucial for maintaining eye health.

2. Not Wearing Sunglasses or Protective Eyewear

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can be very damaging to the eyes, promoting early cataracts and increasing the risk of macular degeneration. Wearing sunglasses that block UV rays is essential to protect your eyes. Additionally, those involved in activities like gardening or DIY projects should wear protective glasses to prevent foreign objects from entering the eyes.

3. Smoking

"Smoking is bad for the eyes, just as it is for almost all human tissue," warns Dr. Poulin. Cigarette smoke contains toxins that can increase the risk of macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness. The toxins in smoke damage the small blood vessels in the back of the eye, causing them to deteriorate more quickly. A healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, combined with regular exercise, can help mitigate some of these risks.

4. Excessive Screen Time Without Breaks

While screens themselves don't pose a direct danger to your eyes, prolonged use can lead to visual fatigue, headaches, and irritation. To combat this, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away. This practice helps keep your eyes hydrated and reduces strain, especially if you wear glasses.

5. Ignoring Systemic Illnesses

Poorly controlled systemic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure can weaken the eyes by affecting the blood vessels that nourish eye structures. "The eyes are weakened by these conditions, making them less able to defend themselves," explains Dr. Poulin. Proper management of these diseases is essential to prevent further visual problems.

Conclusion

Taking proactive steps to care for your eyes can significantly impact your overall health and quality of life. Regular eye exams, wearing appropriate eyewear, avoiding smoking, managing screen time, and controlling systemic diseases are crucial behaviors to maintain optimal eye health. By avoiding these harmful behaviors, you can better preserve your vision and enjoy a healthier future.
